New Restaurant Colonia San Rafael
We live in Colonia San Rafael, which is between Olympo and Independencia on the next hill to the west from El Centro San Miguel de Allende. A couple of artists have opened a cool little restaurant on Calle Fray Servando Teresa de Mier, which is the newly paved concrete street which goes from Calle Antonio Villanueva up the ravine which separates Colonia San Rafael from Colonia Independencia. Never mind the street number, they're all mixed up. The place is called the Galeria, and it's at the wide place on the right as you go up. They're open Tues - Sunday 6 pm to 11 pm. These two young people have brought an unexpected artistic flair to their little restaurant. The house specialty is burritos, yes, with a short list of unusual (to gringos) fillings, such as piccadillo, rajas, pollo con mole, and so on. The presentation also has flair: the burritos are served in a little basket with a colorful cloth covering. The paintings which are on display are all for sale, of course. No, there's no beer, only refrescos, bottled water, coffee, and the house specialty cinnamon tea. We're hoping they will stay in business (restaurants come and go like mushrooms after a rain in San Miguel de Allende) and that they might even give the wildly popular Taqueria Don Felix in nearby Colonia Independencia a run for their money. (We love Don Felix, too! They also have unusual Mexican specialty dishes far beyond the usual tacos al pastor.)
